Reading at Home

Book Club is a great way to make reading part of your daily family life. Each week you will get a blue bag with reading material and a book club weekly recording sheet. Your child should spend quality time with a book, newspaper, or magazine.  As you can see, you have many choices when it comes to reading, but I will provide books each week in case you need new reading material at home. At the beginning of the year, it will be our letter books and sight word books and allow your child to read them to you. Beginning in January, I will add new, leveled books for your child to enjoy. Quality reading time includes reading silently, reading orally, or best of all, having someone read aloud to him or her.   After reading, your child should record his/her minutes of time spent reading on the book club page. Children should return this page and the reading material in the blue bag to school at the beginning of each school week. The children will tally their reading minutes on their individual classroom chart. This is a fun activity that shares their reading time at home with their classmates.  It also uses mathematical skills to record progress. Each time your child has read 500 minutes, they will have the opportunity to choose a free book to keep. Reading with your child is he very best way to convince him/her that reading is a fun and valued family activity.  Happy reading!
